What is Sport Climbing?
Sport Climbing is climbing with a fixed safety guard. The climber wears a harness and is tied to a rope, which is controlled by a person below, called a belayer. Climbers protect themselves in case of a fall by attaching a rope to a bolt in the wall as they climb. The

Technique is the key to this form of climbing, which is fairly safe. The goal is to climb from the bottom to the top using only your own strength – hands, feet, knees, elbows, etc. Relaxing with taut ropes or pulling equipment fastened to the wall are cheats!
Why is it called sports climbing?
This is called sport climbing because it is considered a sportier and more physical method of climbing than other types of climbing. You can safely fall over, and when you complete a path, you will descend to move on to the next path.

Terms of Sport Climbing
- Bolts – A metal rod that is drilled, glued, or secured to the wall with spacer bolts. Most people use the word “bolt” to refer to a complete set of bolts, hangars, and nuts.
- Hangar – The part that connects the Guy Wire. The protruding piece of metal is attached to the wall with bolts, nuts and washers. Sometimes a hangar is part of a bolt (eg when a bolt is attached).
- Carabiner – A metal oval that opens with a small turnstile. Some kind of screw is closed. It’s much stronger than you think.
- Quickdraw / Draw – Two carabiners connected by a sturdy, stitched string. One carabiner is attached to the bolt so that the line hangs freely and the rope is secured to the lower carabiner.
- Anchor – A bolt or common gear placed to indicate a launch or anchor point.

Lead Climbing vs. Top Roping
Lead climbing means coming up off the ground by clinging to a bolt as you move. Take the guy line and bolt it, then screw the rope to the quickdraw.
Usually pull the rope down the route, but leave the person in place. Then you or your partner can climb up and secure the rope in tension. You can also be a leader in traditional climbing, but install protective gear instead of bolts.

A overhead rope is when the rope crosses the anchor point or the guy line above you. Usually someone leads first and pulls the top rope. You can also pull the top rope if you can get to the top.
Indoors, leads can be raised and lowered and a rope can be tied to the top rope. Most people learn rope climbing indoors, develop skills and confidence, then learn to guide the climb and eventually climb outdoors.
Is sport climbing dangerous?
Yes and No. People who see this might think that the rope will break or the equipment will break, but in sports climbing this is by no means the case. It’s definitely physical activity! Abrasions and bruises are common. Falling is always a little scary, but you can learn to get used to it.
More serious but less common dangers occur with awkward falls, head bumps against walls, falling off stones, or failure to land on wrists or ankles. If a climber makes a mistake while tying or descending, death will result. Wearing a helmet outdoors and a good partner certification system can eliminate dangers.
Indoor vs Outdoor Climbing
The Climbing Gym makes it much easier to prepare for your climb. In the internal route, a permanent guy is attached to each bolt. The trail also has an easy way down from the top. Usually a pair of sturdy carabiners.
For the upper rope, the rope is already threaded into the upper anchor, so you can simply tie it up and climb it. Some routes have both top ropes and lead ropes. When did sport climbing start?
