- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
What Is Liquid Chalk?
Liquid climbing chalk is standard climbing chalk mixed with a liquid – normally a form of alcohol – that evaporates when exposed to air. You pour it onto your hands, rub it in, then leave it for 2060 seconds to dry. Once it`s done you get a brilliant and even layer of chalk that gets into the crevices in your fingers really well.
Quite aptly referred to as “antilube” by a friend. The main ingredients are normally: –
Magnesium Carbonate – MgCO3 – Nearly all climbing chalk is a form of this
Alcohol – Either isopropanol, ethanol, or npropanol – Keeps in liquid form, then dries when exposed to air
Other ingredients can also include a thickener that gives a more gel like consistency and stops separation in the bottle. It can also help you get a thicker layer on your hands. It may be helpful for those with sweaty hands and may add too much desiccant for others. Some brands contain rosin to reduce stickiness, but are not generally approved for outdoor use. More on this below. Fragrance is sometimes added to neutralize the odor of alcohol.
Is Liquid Chalk Better than Loose Chalk?
This is actually a personal preference. Some people think so. After applying a layer, you usually don’t need to chalk it up again for a while. This can be really helpful if your path is limited and you find yourself exhausted with chalk. Some of the benefits: –

- Reduced chalk waste
- Reduced atmospheric chalk dust
- Uniform coverage
- Good for less landfill and not wasting time bouldering.
- Alone – put it in your pocket and keep it dry.
- Excellent as a base coat.
- The alcohol evaporates and cools your hands quickly.
Will Liquid Chalk Kill Coronavirus?
The virus that causes COVID-19 is called SARSCoV2. We wrote an article on whether liquid chalk has antibacterial properties and can kill the SARSCoV2 virus. Simply put, some people claim that liquid chalk with alcohol has antibacterial properties and can even kill viruses. But we can’t say yes to both cases as there is no evidence and there are a few things to the contrary.
Many gyms ask climbers to use liquid chalk instead of loose chalk. Sharing a bag of chalk seems like a bad idea, so we don’t recommend doing it. When the alcohol content of liquid chalk exceeds a certain percentage (60% + ethanol or 70% + isopropanol), it can be useful in killing viruses and has an antibacterial effect. This could be the key here. We don’t know if
liquid chalk will help as a disinfectant, but it’s worth a try. Loose chalk dust can affect lung health, and the virus has the potential to spread through airborne dust. Again, these topics have not yet been explored in depth, but this article covers these topics in full.
If the gym asks you to use liquid chalk, please. Everyone is doing their best to stop the spread of coronavirus. This is not the conspiracy the big chalk and liquor industry dream of.
Is reson in liquid climbing chalk bad?

Climbing Chalk sometimes contains rosin and pine sap to help with stickiness. Also known as Colophonium or colophony, resin or Styrax Benzoin when from another tree. This is the same poof juice used by Boulder in Old School Fontainebleau. For liquid chalk, you can stick the chalk on your hands, and it can also increase adhesion to the wall.
Pof and resin are known to actually leave a sludge that is very difficult to remove from the rock. Font blocks that have been in resin for a long time remain noticeably smoother. It’s not entirely clear whether the resin in liquid chalk can do the same, but there is some evidence. Outdoor use of resin on real stones is strongly discouraged in most countries of the world.
Disadvantages of Liquid Climbing Chalk
It may seem a bit odd to splash your hands on a white liquid mash for the first time. Chalk is designed to remove moisture, so it may not be intuitive to use a liquid. Some Disadvantages of Liquid Chalk: –
- Bad Smell – Will fade over time, but
- Drying Time – May take about 1 minute
- Dry Hands – Blessing or Curse Bottle dries when lid is opened
- Chalk easily can’t do it in the middle of the road booze cuts and scratches stab like crazy birthday boy’s clapping in front of his parents doesn’t look too cool
Does liquid chalk dry out your skin?
Alcohol dries hands very well. For some, the brittle chalk is not cut, and the liquid is a messenger of God. For people with sweaty hands, this can really help. It may be too dry for people with sensitive or very dry skin. Always wash your hands well after climbing and use chalk, especially liquid chalk. After climbing, moisten with water or use climbing ointment. Choose one that nourishes but does not soften the skin. Here are some possible ways you can get rid of dry skin with liquid crayons that contain alcohol.
Alcohol-Free Liquid Climbing Chalk

For example, some liquid crayons do not contain alcohol, but have the same benefits. Some people find it works much easier on the skin and doesn’t dry out their hands much after a session. It has the added bonus that it doesn’t smell like alcohol, which some people prefer.

DIY Liquid Chalk Making
It’s as easy as mixing regular chalk with alcohol, rubbing it in a 2:1 ratio of regular chalk to chalk. Place the ingredients in a bowl or blender and mix until thickened. You can use a sugar-coated bag or a zipped bag with truncated edges to put it in the container.
After mixing, it is important to store it in an airtight container to avoid drying out. Make a small batch first to see the result and see how it lasts. Let us know how it goes on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
